- ABOUT THIS MANUAL
-
-
- In addition to providing information for the first time user, this manual
- is a guide to configuring your system for use with the WB2OPA LogMaster
- Plus/Plus, and is the reference text for it's operation.
-
- The reference section of this manual is organized to reflect the hierarchy
- of menus you will encounter while using the program.
-
-
- A NOTE ABOUT TRAVERSING THROUGH THE PROGRAM MENUS
-
-
- The following keys are the most commonly used to navigate through the menus
- of the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus.
-
- UP OR DOWN ARROWS For pop up menus, use these keys
- to highlight a selection. For log
- entry menus, use these keys to
- select the next field.
-
- ESCAPE This key is generally used to exit
- any menu or to abort an action.
-
- ENTER This key is used to select an item
- from a pop up menu, or
- to enter an entry in a log sheet
- field.
-
- FIRST LETTER OF POP UP This is a quick way to select
- MENUS an item from a pop up menu.
-
-
-
-
- WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO RUN THIS PROGRAM
-
-
- The WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus program was designed to run on an IBM PC or
- compatible. It requires at least 512K of available memory, a hard disk and
- a single floppy drive. It is compatible with both monochrome and color
- displays.
-
- An optional EPSON FX80, IBM ProPrinter, or HP LasertJet compatible printer
- will allow you to print log sheets, QSL labels, and QSL cards (HP LaserJet
- does not support QSL Card printing - labels and reports only).
-
- If you have a computer equipped radio, the program will automatically
- extract frequency and mode information while logging a QSO and QSY the

- radio from a PacketCluster DX spot.
-
-
-
- BEFORE YOU BEGIN
-
-
- It is necessary to configure your system environment for the proper
- operation of the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus program. A special file, called
- CONFIG.SYS, contains the information used to establish the system
- environment during the power up sequence.
-
- To determine if you have a CONFIG.SYS file for your system, go to the root
- directory of the drive you boot your system from. Most likely you will be
- booting from drive C.
-
- To get to the root directory of your boot drive type
-
- CD C:\
-
- and then press ENTER.
-
- Next type
-
- DIR CONFIG.SYS
-
- and then press ENTER.
-
- If the directory command reports that there is already a file called
- config.sys, you must check to see if the following two lines are present in
- this file.
-
- FILES=20
- BUFFERS=15
-
- To do so, type the following command and then check the file.
-
- TYPE CONFIG.SYS
-
- and then press ENTER.
- If the previous lines are not present, or if the values are less than the
- ones specified above, you must edit the file to include this information.
- To do so use your favorite text editor.
-
- If there is no config.sys file present on your system, then just copy the
- one provided on the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus distribution disk.

-
-
- INSTALLING THE WB2OPA LOGMASTER PLUS/PLUS ON YOUR SYSTEM
-
-
- The format for the installation command is
-
- X: INSTALL
-
- where X is the primary floppy drive, either A or B, into which you are
- placing the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus distribution disk.
-
- If you purchased 5.25" diskettes, then place disk #1 in your floppy drive.
-
-
- STARTUP
-
-
-
- To start the program, go to the drive and directory where you installed the
- WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus EXECUTABLES, and type
-
- LM
-
- and then press ENTER.
-
- RUNNING THE WB2OPA LOGMASTER PLUS/PLUS FOR THE FIRST TIME
- The very first time you start up the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus, you will
- be greeted by the "Hello New User" section of the program. This section
- customizes the program to fit your individual needs.
-
-
- NOTE: You will see this screen only the very first time you run the
- WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus. However, you may change any of your
- entries after you exit this section by going to the configuration
- menus during normal runtime of the program(refer to the
- UTILITIES/CONFIGURATION menu section of this manual).
-
-
- ENTERING YOUR LOCAL TIME ZONE
-
-
- The first thing you are required to do, is to select your local time zone.
- Press ENTER to select the time zone menu. Use the up, and down ARROW keys
- to find your time zone, and then press ENTER to make your selection, or
- simply press the key for the FIRST LETTER of the time zone.
-
- If you have selected one of the four U.S. time zones you may exit this
- portion of the initialization program by pressing ESCAPE.
-
- Daylight savings time is automatically enabled for the U.S time zones. This
- will allow the local time to automatically be displayed as daylight savings

-
- time, when the United States enters the daylight savings time period, and
- to return to standard time at the appropriate date. In addition, the number
- of hours from GMT will automatically be entered.
-
- If you selected Other as the your time zone, then enter any three letter
- combination to indicate your time zone, and then press ENTER.
-
- Next you must select daylight savings time enable or disable. Move the
- highlight bar using the up or down ARROW keys, or the D key to select the
- daylight savings time menu. If your local daylight savings time period
- tracks that of the United States, then select the ENABLE option in the
- menu, if not then select DISABLE. If you select DISABLE, then you will
- manually have to change the time zone, and hours from GMT menus when you go
- to and from standard time.
-
- Finally, you must enter the difference of hours between your standard time
- zone and GMT.
-
- To exit this set of menus, and to continue, press the ESCAPE key.
-
-
-
- ENTERING YOUR LOG NAME AND DIRECTORY PATH
-
-
- You must enter the full directory path, and the name of the log file you
- wish to create. So for example, if you wish to call your log file MYLOG,
- and place it in the directory called LOGDIRECTORY, and have this directory
- reside on the C drive, then enter:
-
- C:\LOGDIRECTORY\MYLOG
-
- When you are satisfied with your entry, press ENTER.
-
-
-
- ENTERING YOUR DEFAULT INPUT OR OUTPUT POWER

- REFERENCE SECTION
-
-
- This section contains a detailed description of the WB2OPA LogMaster
- Plus/Plus. It is organized to reflect the hierarchy of menus that you will
- encounter while using the system.
-
- Some helpful tips are be provided in this section so that you may utilize
- the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus to its fullest extent, and so that you may
- take advantage of all of its powerful features.
-
- SCREEN AREAS
-
-
- Let's take a look at the Main Menu screen, the first screen you will see
- after starting the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus, and the three major screen
- areas.
-
- DUAL CLOCK - CALENDAR
-
- At the top of the screen you will always see the Dual Clock Calendar. The
- left side shows local time, and the right side shows Greenwich Mean Time.
- The Dual Clock Calendar is always exposed so that you may have access to
- the current time, and date.
-
-
- HELP AREA
-
- At the bottom of the screen is the Help Area. This area will contain a
- brief description of the current activity, or will contain a set of valid
- of key depressions for the current activity.
-
-
- ACTIVITY AREA
-
- The Activity Area is the central part of your screen. At start up, the main
- menu command bar is displayed. The current activity for this screen is to
- make a selection from the main menu command bar. For other activities you
- may see pop up menus, or a log sheet, or a display of QSO statistics. This
- is the area where you will do all of your work.
-
-
- MAIN MENU COMMAND BAR
-
- The Main Menu COMMAND Bar allows you to choose the logging activity you
- wish to perform. The choices are:
-
- Log enter new QSO records.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Copyright (c) 1992 Sensible Solutions Page 7
-
-
- View display, edit, or delete a QSO record
- using a set of user selectable sort criteria.
-
- Search search for specific QSO records using
- full or partial search keys, and then display,
- edit, or delete the record.
-
- Print print a complete hard copy of your log, or print
- a log starting from a specified date, or print a
- log in callsign order for various contests and
- awards.
-
- Utilities modify the configuration parameters, perform
- operations on the log database to restore an
- index file or remove unused space, generate log
- statistics, update all log records after printing
- QSL cards, or labels.
-
- Quit - exit the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus and return to DOS.
-
-
- SELECTING FROM THE MAIN MENU COMMAND BAR
-
-
- To select any of the main menu command bar choices, use the left and right
- ARROW KEYS to move the highlight to the function you wish to choose, and
- then press ENTER.
-
- Another way to make a selection, is to type the first letter of your
- choice. Using this method you will not have to press the ENTER key.
-
- After making your selection, a pop up menu will appear to lead you through
- the choices for the command.
-
-
-
- SELECTING FROM POP UP MENUS
-
-
- To make a selection from any of the pop menus, use the UP and DOWN ARROW
- KEYS to move the highlight to the function you wish to select, then press
- the ENTER key, or simply type the first letter of the selection.
-
- Now let's look at each of the choices from the main menu command bar in
- detail.
- LOG
-
- If you select Log from the main menu command bar, the Log pop up menu
- appears. This menu allows you to select either of the two log session
- types.
-
-
-
-
-
- Copyright (c) 1992 Sensible Solutions Page 8
-
-
-
-
- AUTO LOG
-
-
- The Auto Log selection is used for most logging situations. It
- automatically fills in the date, start time, and ending time for you.
-
- NOTE: If you have a computer equipped transceiver supported by the
- program, the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus will automatically fill
- in the transmission and reception frequencies and transmission
- mode type. The frequency values will reflect XIT, RIT, and SPLIT
- offsets if the computer interface for your radio supports it.
-
-
-
- MANUAL LOG
-
-
-
- The Manual Log selection, has been provided to allow you to manually enter
- the date and time for the QSO. Its main purpose is to allow you to enter
- QSOs from another log.
-
-
-
- RAPID ENTRY LOG
-
-
-
- The Rapid Entry Log selection is similar to the Auto Log, but is used
- during contest type situations where you need to limit the number of
- keystrokes. If you are not using a computer ready rig, it assumes that you
- will be operating from a single frequency for several QSOs. If you are
- using a computer ready rig, it will read the freq and mode automatically.
-
-
- The following discussion about RAPID ENTRY LOG assumes that you are
- familiar with entering QSO data. If you are not, you may wish to skip this
- discussion for now, and return to it after reading the general information
- about log entry procedure, discussed below.
-
-
- When entering your first QSO you will be prompted for Transmit Frequency,
- Receive Frequency, and Mode. After this information is entered for the
- first time, you will not be prompted again, and is used as default
- information.
-
-
- If you would like to set this information prior to starting on the air
-
-
-
-
-
- Copyright (c) 1992 Sensible Solutions Page 9
-
-
- operation, just enter a "dummy" QSO, but do not save it. Use the HOME key
- to go to the STATION WORKED field, to get ready for your first QSO, and the
- frequency and mode will be retained for the "real" QSO.
-
-
- If you wish to change the frequency or mode fields, use the UP and DOWN
- arrow keys to visit the fields, then enter the new value and it will be
- retained for the next QSO also.
-
-
-
-
-
- You may save the record by pressing F10 when the cursor is at the RST
- RECEIVED field, or you may continue to enter data into all the other
- fields.
-
-
- NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE PROMPTED IF YOU WISH TO SAVE THE RECORD WHEN EITHER
- PRESSING F10 OR VISITING THE LAST FIELD OF THE RECORD. TO SAVE KEYSTROKES,
- THE PROGRAM WILL AUTOMATICALLY SAVE THE RECORD FOR YOU.
-
-
- If you have DUPE CHECKING enabled, the TAG field will automatically be set
- to DUPLICATE if a duplicate is found. This was done so that if you save a
- duplicate record by mistake, you can find it easily and eliminate it from
- your log, at your leisure.
-
-
- In addition, if you wish to mark all the QSOs with the same TAG, for
- example you wish to mark them with WAZ/10-12-90, to identify the contest
- and date, simply enter the TAG for the first contact, and it will be
- retained for the entire logging session. If dupe checking is enabled, the
- TAG will contain the word DUPLICATE if a duplicate is found. When the next
- non-duplicate QSO is entered, the TAG field will default back to the ID tag
- if you have previously entered one.
-
-
- If you go from RAPID ENTRY to AUTOMATIC or MANUAL mode, you may freely use
- the TAG field. The RAPID ENTRY TAG will be retained if you return to the
- RAPID ENTRY mode.
-
-
- If you leave the LogMaster program however, and return to DOS, the default
- frequency, mode, and tag fields are NOT saved. You will have to enter them
- again. However they are retained, if you exit the logging area and visit
- any other area of the LogMaster program.

-
-
-
-
- LOG ENTRY FORM SCREEN
-
-
-
- After making a selection from the LOG pop up menu, a log entry form will
- appear on your screen. The top border contains an ID line, reflecting your
- choice from the Log pop up menu. The ID line will indicate if the current
- log session is either auto, manual or rapid entry. If you selected auto or
- rapid entry, and the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus detects a computer ready
- rig, it will indicate this as well.
-
- At the bottom of the form is the help area. A brief description for each
- entry field on the log form will appear as you access the individual entry
- field. Below the entry field help line, is a list of valid keys. Let's
- first look at each of the entry fields, and then we will return to a
- discussion of the valid keys for this form.

- FIELD SELECT KEYS
-
-
- UP ARROW
-
-
- The UP ARROW key, found on the numerical keypad, is used to move the cursor
- to the previous field. For example, if the cursor is at the receive
- frequency field, hitting the UP ARROW key will move the cursor to the
- transmit frequency field. If the cursor is at the first user available
- field, if you press the UP ARROW key, the cursor will move to the last
- exposed field.
-
-
-
- DOWN ARROW
-
-
- The DOWN ARROW key, found on the numerical keypad, is used to move the
- cursor to the next field. If the cursor is at the last exposed field, the
- cursor will move to the first user available field.
-
-
-
- HOME
-
-
- The HOME key, found on the numerical keypad, is used to move to the first
- user accessible log field.
-
- TIP: If you use the auto log to help determine if you need a contact, and
- then decide that you don't, use the HOME key to enter the next
- potential QSO's callsign (in auto mode). All pertinent
- information, such as country, beam heading, zone, etc. will
- automatically be updated for the new callsign.
-
-
-
- END
-
-
- The END key, found on the numerical keypad, is used to move to the last

- FUNCTION KEYS
-
- When a function key is active, the key will have a description next to it.
- If the function key is inactive only the key name is displayed. For example
- if you have enabled the dupe feature ( see F5 below), but no duplicates
- have been found, "F6 -" will be displayed with no description next to it.
- However when a duplicate is found, "F6 Show Duplicate Summary", will be
- displayed, indicating that the F6 key is now active.
-
-
-
- F1 - NOTEPAD
-
-
- You may attach a note to each record using the notepad feature of the
- WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus. Pressing F1 will pop up the notepad window. You
- may type anything you wish, and after you are done, hit ESCAPE, to save
- your entry and to return to the log entry screen.
-
-
-
- F2 - FREQUENCY UPDATE
-
-
- This function key is active only if you are using a supported computer
- ready radio. You may update the auto frequency entry by pressing F2. The
- transmit frequency, receive frequency, and mode fields will be updated to
- reflect the current state of the radio.
-
-
-
- F3 - QBICSP ENABLE/DISABLE
-
-
- SO, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS QBICSP ?
-
-
- QBICSP is a unique feature of the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus program. If
- enabled it will tell you if you need a QSO by highlighting a letter in the
- word "QBICSP" for each of the following reasons.
-
- Q a new CQ zone.
- B if this QSO is needed for the current frequency/mode combination,
-
-
-
-
-
- Copyright (c) 1992 Sensible Solutions Page 24
-
-
- qualified by CQ zone, ITU zone, country, state, or prefix. If for
- example you have worked Angola on 20 meter USB, and you are
- currently working an Angolan station, on 40 meter CW, the B in
- QBICSP will be highlighted to tell you that this is a QSO you
- need for the frequency/mode combination. This feature fully
- qualifies the QSO for you after you enter the MODE field, and you
- may use it to see if you want or need the QSO before calling the
- station.
- I a new ITU zone.
- C a new country.
- S a new state if the country is the United States.
- P a new prefix.
-
-
-
- ENABLING/DISABLING THE FEATURE
-
-
- The F3 key toggles between enabling or disabling this feature. If you wish
- to have the feature enabled all the time, use the
- UTLITIES/CONFIGURATION/QBICSP menu.
-
-
-
- F4 - RST SENT SERIAL NUMBER ENABLE/DISABLE
-
-
- This key allows you to attach a serial number to the RST sent. A pop up
- window will ask you for the starting number. If you disable this function
- after having enabled it, the last serial number is retained, and the
- serial numbers continue where you left off, unless of course you wish to
- change the starting point. This is useful if you are casually working a
- contest, and wish to leave the contest for a while and then continue with
- it at a later time. The F4 key provides a toggling function for this
- feature.
-
-
-
- F5 - DUPE CHECK ENABLE/SELECT/DISABLE
-
-
- This key allows you to toggle the dupe checking feature for your entire
- log. If you are enabling the feature, a pop-up window will ask you to
- qualify the dupe check search criteria. The search criteria available is as
- follows, and any one of the criteria may be selected.

-
-
-
- STATISTICS
-
- DX, STATES (U.S.), CQ ZONES, ITU ZONES
-
- This section is used to help you keep track of your QSO achievements.
-
- There are three classes of statistics provided by the WB2OPA LogMaster
- Plus/Plus. The first class is a detailed report of the countries, states,
- CQ zones, or ITU zones worked.
-
- Invoking any of these choices produces a detailed report that contains each
- item name, such as country name, ITU zone, etc., and a report box for each
- of the 9 HF bands. The report box will contain the QSO indicators, the
- letters P, F, and C, indicating if you have worked the item on Phone (AM,
- LSB, USB, or FM), FSK, or CW. If the item has been confirmed, the
- appropriate QSO indicator will be in reverse video.
-
- NOTE: An asterisk next to either a CQ or ITU zone, indicates that the
- value is a best guess made by the program at logging time. If you
- are collecting either of these zones for an award, you will
- probably like to get back to each of the records containing the
- asterisk, and resolve the ambiguity. You may do so, by using
- either the VIEW or SEARCH selections from the main menu command
- bar, and then selecting the appropriate search or sort type.
-
-
-
- QSL
-
-
- The QSL statistical report contains information on your QSL activity,
- including return rates for both standard and special QSLs, return rates for
- those QSLs that you initiated, and those you did not, and totals for the
- QSL cards you sent, and received.
-
- In addition, the amount you have spent on postage is displayed. A separate
- total is provided for IRCs, and cash.
-
-
-
- TOTAL QSOS
-
-
- This selection will give you a synopsis of your entire log. It contains
- totals for countries, states, CQ zones, ITU zones, and total QSOs, both
-
-

-
- worked and confirmed. This information is given for each of the 9 HF bands.
-
-
-
- DATA RECOVERY
-
-
- There are two database utilities provided with this package.
-
- Both of these utilities may take some time to perform, so make sure that
- you really have the time to perform them.
-
-
-
- COMPRESS DATABASE
-
-
- This utility is used after you have edited or deleted many QSL records. The
- program tries to reuse disk space where it can, but sometimes, disk space
- is left unused,
-
- Use this utility to reclaim this unused disk space.
-
-
- NOTE: Do NOT stop this utility once it has begun. You MUST exit and
- then reinvoke the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus after the utility
- completes. The time on the dual clock/calendar may stop while
- running this these utility.
-
-
-
- REBUILD INDEX
-
-
- This utility will rebuild the log index file if you suspect that the index
- file is corrupt. This utility is provided for completeness, but in general
- you will not be using this utility.
- If your index file becomes corrupted due to a power outage, then the next
- time you invoke the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus program, the corrupted file
- will be automatically detected, and you will be prompted to rebuild the
- index.
-
-
- NOTE: Do NOT stop this utility once it has begun. You MUST exit and
- then reinvoke the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus after the utility
- completes. The time on the dual clock/calendar may stop while
- running this these utility.

-
- MOVE QSL MARKS
-
-
- This utility allows you to change all of the QSL SENT fields in your log
- that have been marked {SEND} to YES. This is useful after you have used the
- external QSL utility to print your QSL cards or labels, and you wish to
- easily update your log without having to edit each individual record.
-
-
-
- EXTERNAL UTILITY PROGRAMS
-
-
- There are additional utilities provided on the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus
- distribution disk. All must started from a DOS prompt in the LogMaster
- subdirectory.
-
-
-
- MERGE
-
- The first is MERGE. To start this program, from the DOS prompt in the
- LogMaster subdirectory, type MERGE. This utility allows you to merge two
- log databases created by using the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus program. You
- may wish to create a separate temporary log during a contest, so that you
- can check dupes within the contest period. However, once the contest is
- over, and you have accumulated your tallies, you may wish to merge the
- temporary log back into your main log. This utility allows you to do so.
-
- You will be prompted for the path and name of the log that you wish to
- merge into. This is the main log in the discussion above. Next you will be
- prompted for the path and name of the log you are merging from. This would
- be the temporary log in the discussion above.
-
- For both prompts, give the full path and log name. The format is the same
- as when you specify a log path. An example might be:
-
- C:\MYLOG\LOG5
-
-
-
- QSL, QSLPRO, QSLHP
-
- The QSL external utility allows you to print QSL labels and QSL cards
- directly from your WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus log. To do so, just set the
- QSL SENT field to {SEND}, and this utility will automatically print your
- labels or cards. The main menu of this utility allows you to choose the
- following activities.
-
- There are three QSL printing utilities provided with the program. The first
-
-
-
-
-

- this program, type QSLPRO instead of QSL as mentioned above.
-
- The third type is QSLHP to be used with LaserJet compatible printer. This
- program will allow you to print QSL labels only. To start this program, use
- QSLHP instead of QSL as mentioned above.

-
- If you see the message, "FATAL ERROR - SEE MANUAL", first try reinstalling
- the WB2OPA LogMaster Plus/Plus. If that does not work, then return your
- distribution disk to the address below with the following information: make
- and model of your computer, version of DOS that you are using, the amount
- of RAM in your computer, and if you are running any TSR programs, such as
- Borland's Sidekick.
-
- Be sure to also include a day time phone number where you may be reached.
-
- If you get a Internal System Error message, then check to make sure that
- you have a config.sys file with the minimum requirements described in the
- installation section of this manual. Reboot your computer immediately, and
- go to the Utilities/Data Recovery/Compress Database menu, and compress your
- data base. This will check and fix any problems that may be present in your
- log book database. This procedure may take a while, so be patient.
